The hidden engine driving the world's most famous hockey stars
In short: Behind every NHL superstar lies a grueling journey through the minor leagues. While the bright lights of the NHL capture the headlines, the ECHL serves as a vital developmental pipeline, refining talent in the shadows of the American Hockey League to prepare players for the highest level of professional play.
The ECHL operates as a critical tier below the American Hockey League (AHL), functioning as a primary farm system for both the AHL and the National Hockey and Hockey League (NHL). Its importance is codified in the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA; if an NHL player is signed to an entry-level contract but assigned to the minors, they must report to either the AHL or the ECHL. This structural link ensures a steady flow of talent, with at least 739 players having reached the NHL after competing in the ECHL.
The league's landscape is one of constant movement and expansion. Founded in 1988 by Virginia oilman Henry Brabham, the league originally began with just five teams, including the Carolina Thunderbirds and the Virginia Lancers. Over decades, it has expanded from a regional 'East Coast' identity to a nationwide presence, even shortening its name to the ECHL in 2003 to reflect its broader reach. This expansion has seen the league navigate the folding of various franchises and the relocation of others, such as the California-based teams that moved to the AHL in 2015.
Despite the volatility of minor league sports—where teams frequently relocate or cease operations due to financial pressures—the league continues to grow. As of the 2026–27 season, 2ary of the 32 NHL franchises maintain direct affiliations with ECHL clubs. Looking forward, the league aims to match the 32-team scale of the NHL and AHL, with new expansion projects like the Greensboro Gargoyles and the New Mexico Goatheads set to join the professional ranks in the coming years.
