Before the MCU, Captain America spent two years frozen in distribution limbo
In short: The 1990 Captain America film was a production nightmare that barely reached the public. After shifting studios, directors, and scripts, the finished project was shelved for two years, eventually bypassing American cinemas entirely for a direct-to-video release. Today, it survives as a cult curiosity with three distinct, competing versions.
The film’s journey began in 1984 when Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus acquired the rights. The project underwent multiple iterations, including a version featuring a stolen Statue of Liberty plot, before director Albert Pyun took over in 1989. Budgetary constraints forced the production to move from Italy to Yugoslavia, and Marvel famously rejected Pyun's requests to use a tactical black suit or hire two different actors to represent Steve Rogers before and after his transformation.
Upon completion, the film faced a troubled release. While it saw limited international theatrical runs—selling 57,857 tickets across the UK and France—it did not debut in the United States until 1992, when Columbia TriStar Home Video released it direct-to-video. Critics were largely dismissive, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 16% approval rating. Entertainment Weekly famously graded the film an 'F,' citing its confusing, shapeless plot and jarring tonal shifts, such as an opening sequence in Italian featuring machine-gun violence.
Despite its poor reception, the film has found a second life through its director's cuts. Pyun released a 110-minute version in 2011, followed by a 111-minute 'Pyun Cut' in 2025, which utilized his original 1989 workprint. These versions, which feature a non-linear structure and a more somber tone, are often cited by fans as superior to the studio-mastered theatrical version. While the original film remains a pre-MCU curio, these alternative cuts have sparked ongoing debate about the director's original vision versus the final product released to the public.
