In short: When Warner Bros. gambled on two unknown leads for a 1935 pirate adventure, they inadvertently launched a legendary screen partnership and pioneered the modern symphonic film score. Despite a troubled production plagued by illness and skepticism, the film became a massive hit that revitalized the swashbuckler genre for a new era.

The 1935 production of Captain Blood was a high-stakes gamble for Warner Bros. The studio initially sought Robert Donat for the lead, but the actor declined due to concerns over the physical demands of the role. After testing several candidates, the studio cast Errol Flynn, an Australian actor they had discovered in a minor British film. Paired with 19-year-old Olivia de Havilland, the duo became an overnight sensation, marking the first of eight collaborations that would define their careers.

The film’s success was bolstered by a groundbreaking musical score from Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Initially reluctant to work on a pirate story, Korngold was swayed by the footage and composed a full-length symphonic work in just three weeks. Because the tight deadline forced him to incorporate existing compositions by Franz Liszt, he requested credit only for musical arrangement. This score set a new standard for Hollywood, establishing Korngold as the first international composer to sign a formal studio contract.

While the film was a commercial triumph, earning a profit of $1.462 million, it faced mixed critical reception. Reviewers like Graham Greene noted historical inaccuracies, while Variety criticized the plot's melodrama and inconsistencies. Nevertheless, the film’s focus on the theme of injustice—a departure from the source novel—resonated with Depression-era audiences. It earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and secured significant write-in support for its director, Michael Curtiz, and its screenwriter, Casey Robinson, cementing its legacy as a milestone in cinematic history.
