A lethal game of cat and mouse between a father and his estranged son
In short: In 1930s Rotterdam, a dreaded bailiff is found dead, and his own son is the prime suspect. This Academy Award-winning drama explores a lifelong, toxic rivalry where a father consistently sabotages his child’s ambitions, only to reveal a shocking, final truth through a posthumous inheritance.
Directed by Mike van Diem and based on the 1938 novel by Ferdinand Bordewijk, the 1997 film Character (Karakter) follows the turbulent life of Jacob Willem Katadreuffe. Katadreuffe is the illegitimate son of A.B. Dreverhaven, a cold-hearted bailiff who refuses to acknowledge his paternity. Throughout his youth, Katadreuffe faces relentless obstruction from his father, who systematically attempts to ruin him—from forcing him into bankruptcy over a failed cigar store to manipulating his professional path. Despite this, Katadreuffe rises from poverty, teaching himself English from an incomplete encyclopedia and eventually qualifying as a lawyer.
The narrative is framed by the investigation into Dreverhaven’s death. Found with a knife in his stomach, the bailiff’s demise initially points toward his son, who was seen leaving the office on the day of the murder. As Katadreuffe recounts their history to the police, the film peels back layers of a complex, forced relationship. It is revealed that Katadreuffe’s mother, Joba, had been a housekeeper for Dreverhaven, and their singular, likely non-consensual encounter resulted in the birth of the son who would become the bailiff's lifelong obsession.
The climax subverts the murder mystery trope when police determine that Dreverhaven actually died by suicide at 11:00 p.m., hours after Katadreuffe had departed. The final twist arrives in the form of a will, leaving the bailiff’s entire fortune to his son, signed simply as 'Vader' (Father). While the film earned critical acclaim, including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it received mixed reactions during its U.S. release. Critics like Janet Maslin noted the visual strength and performances, particularly that of Jan Decleir, while questioning the film's episodic pacing and narrative clarity.
Production of the film was an international effort, with principal photography beginning in Rotterdam on 30 May 1996, though many scenes were actually filmed in Wrocław, Poland. In 2020, a 4K restoration supervised by van Diem and performed by the Eye Film Institute was released, ensuring the film's legacy continues for new audiences.
