A grieving father turns into a one-man army in this icy Norwegian revenge thriller
In short: When a snow plow driver is named citizen of the year, his quiet life in Norway is shattered by his son's suspicious death. Convinced the police are wrong about the cause, he embarks on a brutal, methodical quest for vengeance that accidentally ignites a war between rival criminal syndicates.
In the 2014 film In Order of Disappearance, directed by Hans Petter Moland, the protagonist Nils Dickman is a simple snow plow driver living in the fictional town of Tyos. His world collapses when his son, Ingvar, is found dead from a heroin overdose. Refusing to accept the official narrative, Nils discovers that Ingvar was an innocent bystander killed by mistake by a gang of drug dealers. This revelation transforms the grieving father into a relentless vigilante, leading him to systematically eliminate the men responsible for his son's death.
The narrative escalates as Nils destroys 15 kilos of cocaine and disposes of three gangsters, Jappe, Ronaldo, and Strike. Seeking to reach the gang's leader, the vegan criminal known as Greven, Nils enlists his brother Egil, a former criminal. The situation spirals into chaos when Greven, suspecting a Serbian mafia family of betraying their territorial agreement, kidnaps and murders the son of the Serbian chief, Papa. This error triggers a bloody conflict between the two criminal organizations, with Nils caught in the middle of the escalating violence.
The film, which premiered at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2014, is noted for its blend of black comedy and thriller elements. Critics have generally responded favorably, with an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 74 out of 100 on Metacritic. The story's unique tone and premise were significant enough to warrant an English-language remake titled Cold Pursuit, released in 2019. Interestingly, Moland returned to direct the remake, which starred Liam Neeson, allowing the director to revisit the icy, violent landscape of his original work for a broader international audience.
