The milestone season that reshaped the Chicago P.D. ensemble
In short: Season 5 of Chicago P.D. served as a pivotal turning point for the long-running drama. Spanning from late 2017 to mid-2018, it marked the series' 100th episode and introduced significant cast shifts that redefined the show's dynamic for years to come.
The fifth season of Chicago P.D. premiered on September 27, 2017, and ran until May 9, 2018. This period was notable for reaching a major production milestone: the series' 100th episode. It also served as a transitional era for the show's core cast, balancing the departure of established characters with the elevation of new ones.
One of the most significant structural changes occurred with the promotion of Tracy Spiridakos. After appearing as a recurring character in the previous season as Detective Hailey Upton, she was elevated to a series regular for season five. This shift coincided with the official departure of Sophia Bush from the series following the season four finale.
The season also saw the conclusion of a long-standing character arc, as it was the final season featuring Elias Koteas as Alvin Olinsky. To fill the narrative space, the production introduced new recurring faces, including Wendell Pierce as Alderman Ray Price and Mykelti Williamson returning as Lieutenant Denny Woods. Other notable additions included Anabelle Acosta as Camila, starting in episode 7, and Zach Appelman as federal prosecutor Matt Miller, who debuted in episode 8.
The ensemble remained anchored by familiar leads like Jason Beghe as Sergeant Henry "Hank" Voight and Jesse Lee Soffer as Detective Jay Halstead. The season's narrative reached its conclusion in May 2018, with the physical media release for the season following in September 2018.
