How a dark coming-of-age story transformed the classic Sabrina Spellman mythos
In short: Sabrina Spellman is no longer just a teenage witch in a sitcom. In this supernatural horror series, she navigates a dual existence as half-witch and half-mortal. Developed for Netflix, the show blends dark magic with coming-of-age struggles, forcing Sabrina to defend her family and the human world from ancient evil.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, reimagines the iconic Archie Comics character as a protagonist in a supernatural horror landscape. Set in the fictional town of Greendale, the series follows Sabrina, portrayed by Kiernan Shipka, as she balances her dark education at the Academy of the Unseen Arts with her life at Baxter High. Unlike lighter iterations, this version emphasizes the tension between her mortal heritage and her witch lineage, complicating her relationships with her aunts, Zelda and Hilda, and her cousin Ambrose.
The narrative structure of the show is defined by its division into four parts across two seasons. Originally developed for The CW as a companion to Riverdale, the project moved to Netflix in December 2017 with a straight-to-series order. The production, filmed in Vancouver, explores themes of witchcraft, fear, and the struggle against malevolent forces, including the machinations of figures like Madam Satan and the Church of Night. The series concluded in December 2020, with Netflix citing the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for its cancellation.
Beyond the central conflict, the series is notable for its expansive cast and mythological depth. Characters range from the warlock Nicholas Scratch to the prince of Hell, Caliban, and the voodoo practitioner Mambo Marie LeFleur. The show also incorporates social and personal evolution, such as the journey of Theo Putnam, who comes out as a transgender boy. While the television run ended, the story continues through a comic book series titled The Occult World of Sabrina and crossover appearances in Riverdale, ensuring the dark legacy of the Spellman family persists.
