In short: Before becoming a blockbuster alien invasion comedy, the 2005 film Chicken Little underwent a radical transformation. Disney executives mandated a gender swap for the protagonist, believing boys would not watch a female-led film. This pivot triggered a massive creative overhaul, resulting in the studio's first fully computer-animated feature film.

In 2001, director Mark Dindal and producer Randy Fullmer began developing a story about a female chicken struggling with anxiety and a fractured relationship with her father. The original script featured a summer camp setting and a nefarious counselor. However, former Disney CEO Michael Eisner insisted on changing the character to a male, citing market research that suggested boys would avoid films with female protagonists. This conventional wisdom held sway until the massive success of Frozen years later.

The production faced further turbulence in 2003 when David Stainton replaced Thomas Schumacher as president of Walt Disney Feature Animation. After a disastrous test screening, Stainton demanded a complete rewrite. Over three months, the team pivoted to a science fiction narrative involving an alien invasion, while retaining some characters from the earlier draft. The writing team ultimately discarded twenty-five scenes to sharpen the emotional core of the father-son dynamic, a process Dindal noted took two and a half years to refine.

Technically, the film represented a pivotal shift for Disney. To compete with Pixar and DreamWorks, the studio transitioned to CGI, training half of its 2D animation staff through an eighteen-month program with Industrial Light and Magic. Animators utilized Maya software and custom tools like 'Shelf Control' to achieve a 'roundness' reminiscent of 1940s and 1950s Disney classics. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film grossed $314 million, becoming the second-highest-grossing animated movie of 2005 and pioneering the use of Digital 3-D in mainstream theaters.
