In short: Created in 1965, Cheburashka is an animal unknown to science with oversized ears and a penchant for tumbling. Though he began as a children's book character, he evolved into a national symbol, a target of political controversy, and a surprising box-office titan in modern Russian cinema.

Eduard Uspensky introduced Cheburashka in his 1965 book, Gena the Crocodile and His Friends. The character’s name stems from the Russian colloquialism 'cheburakhnulsya,' meaning to tumble, inspired by the creature falling off a table after being discovered in a crate of oranges. Physically, he is described as having a bear-like body, large monkey-like ears, and big black eyes. Animation historian Sergey Kapkov characterizes him as a stranger whose singular, optimistic mission is to foster friendship, while art historian Leonid Katz views him as an embodiment of an unreachable, innocent ideal.

The character’s journey from literature to screen was marked by both success and friction. While the original stop-motion films by Roman Kachanov became beloved, Soviet censors initially attempted to suppress them for mocking bureaucrats and the Young Pioneers. Despite this, Cheburashka became a cultural fixture, appearing as a mascot for the Russian Olympic team in 2006, 2008, and 2010. His influence even crossed borders; in Sweden, he was adapted into a puppet series called Drutten och Jena, which ran from 1973 to 1988, though the Swedish version diverged significantly from the original Russian narrative.

In recent years, the character has remained a lightning rod for debate. Legal battles over copyright, particularly between Uspensky and art director Leonid Shvartsman, highlighted the complexity of intellectual property in the post-Soviet era. By 2026, the character faced unexpected political scrutiny, with some Russian figures labeling the films harmful or ideologically suspect. Nevertheless, the 2023 live-action film became the highest-grossing movie in Russian box office history, proving that the 'animal unknown to science' remains a powerful, if polarizing, force in contemporary culture.
