From sitcom stardom to tech founder: The evolution of Peter Brady
In short: Most people remember Christopher Knight as the middle son in a 1970s sitcom. But behind the wholesome image of Peter Brady lies a complex career pivot from Hollywood acting to founding high-tech companies and producing award-winning documentaries.
Born in New York City in 1957, Christopher Knight entered the public consciousness as a teenager. He landed his breakout role in 1969 on ABC's 'The Brady Bunch,' a series that defined family television for five years. Beyond his live-action work, he also provided the voice of Peter in the animated spin-off 'The Brady Kids.' While many child stars struggle with identity after their initial fame, Knight navigated a deliberate transition into professional life.
In 1988, Knight made a significant career shift by leaving acting to enter the information technology sector. Identifying as a self-described "geek," he moved from account sales management at Martec, Inc. and New Image Industry to becoming an entrepreneur. He co-founded Visual Software in 1991 and established Kidwise Learningware in 1995. By 1998, he founded Eskape Labs, a TV tuner company that was eventually acquired by Hauppauge Computer Works in 2000.
Knight's return to the spotlight in the 2000s was marked by reality television and game show hosting, including 'The Surreal Life' and 'Trivial Pursuit: America Plays.' However, his recent work shows a shift toward production. In 2019, he co-founded Former Prodigy Media with producer Phil Viardo. This venture produced the 2023 award-winning documentary 'Truelove,' which tells the story of Callie Truelove, a teenager with Williams syndrome—a project that highlights Knight's move toward more substantive storytelling.
Despite his business success, Knight remains a staple of the Brady Bunch legacy. He has participated in numerous reunions ranging from 1976 to 2021, including 'A Very Brady Renovation' and various holiday specials. His career serves as a case study on how a public figure can successfully balance nostalgic brand management with independent business ventures.
