The long, winding road to a female-led mountain thriller
In short: A single film project can span decades, morphing through multiple directors, scripts, and lead actors. The upcoming 2027 film Cliffhanger is a masterclass in Hollywood's creative evolution, shifting from a direct Sylvester Stallone sequel to a complete reimagining with an entirely new cast.
The journey of the 2027 Cliffhanger began as a pursuit of a direct sequel to the 1993 original. In 1994, TriStar Pictures first announced 'Cliffhanger 2: The Dam,' featuring Sylvester Stallone. This project languished in development for years, briefly reviving in 2008 before being shelved. By 2009, the focus shifted toward a reimagining involving a group of young climbers, with producer Neal H. Moritz aiming for a style comparable to J.J. Abrams' work on Star Trek.
The project underwent several identity crises before settling into its current form. In 2019, Rocket Science optioned the rights to create a female-led version. This evolved into a 'legacy-sequel' in 2023, which would have featured Stallone returning as Gabriel Walker in the Italian Alps. However, a major creative overhaul in October 2024 saw Stallone and director Ric Roman Waugh depart. Jaume Collet-Serra took over as director, and the film was reimagined as a reboot starring Lily James as Naomi Cooper.
The narrative now centers on Naomi, who witnesses a kidnapping of a billionaire's son and must rescue her father, Ray Cooper, and her sister, Sydney. While the production faced distribution hurdles—with reports of shifting deals between Row K Entertainment, Decal, and Vertical—the film is currently slated for a spring 2027 release. The project has already secured plans for a sequel, signaling a new franchise trajectory for the mountain-based action thriller.
