In short: The fourth installment of the Critters series abandoned the suburban settings of its predecessors for a desolate space station in the year 2045. Filmed alongside the third movie, this entry introduced a darker, more serious tone as a salvage crew accidentally awakens a frozen bounty hunter and deadly alien eggs.

Released in 1992 and directed by Rupert Harvey, Critters 4 serves as the final chapter of the original film series. The story follows Charlie McFadden, who, after being prevented from destroying the last two Krite eggs by a holographic message from Ug, is accidentally launched into deep space. He remains frozen for over half a century until the crew of the salvage ship RSS Tesla discovers his pod in 2045.

The narrative shifts to an abandoned space station owned by the corporation TerraCor. The crew, led by the opportunistic Captain Rick Buttram, discovers that the facility was used by Dr. McCormick for illicit bioweapon research. The Krites, once unleashed, begin to breed rapidly, threatening to hijack the Tesla to reach Earth. The film marks a significant departure from the franchise's earlier comedic roots, focusing instead on the grim reality of corporate greed and the survival of the remaining crew members, including the young apprentice Ethan.

The climax reveals a betrayal by Ug, who aligns himself with the corrupt Councilor Tetra to secure the Krite eggs. The tension peaks as the station faces an imminent reactor meltdown. Through a series of desperate maneuvers—including using the station's malfunctioning computer, Angela, to trap the antagonists—the survivors manage to eliminate the Krite threat and destroy the station. The film concludes with Charlie, Fran, and Ethan escaping just as the Krites are rendered extinct.

While the film was initially released on VHS in 1998, it has since seen several home media iterations, including a 2018 Blu-ray collection from Shout! Factory. The franchise eventually saw a revival in 2019 with the web series Critters: A New Binge. Despite the shift in tone and setting, Critters 4 remains a notable conclusion to the original saga, documenting the final stand against the rapidly reproducing alien organisms.
