A galaxy-spanning reality show built from the remains of Earth
In short: After an alien corporation mines Earth's resources, survivors are forced into a deadly intergalactic reality show. In the Dungeon Crawler World, humans must navigate eighteen levels of a reconstructed dungeon to survive. This science fantasy saga follows Carl and his sapient cat, Princess Donut, through this cosmic game.
In Matt Dinniman's science fantasy LitRPG saga, US Coast Guard veteran Carl and his tortoiseshell Persian cat, Princess Donut, navigate a perilous survival game. The series explores a world where the Syndicate, a galaxy-spanning corporation, uses the destruction of Earth's resources to fund its operations. The survivors, known as crawlers, must navigate the eighteen-level World Dungeon, which was reconstructed using the very resources mined from Earth. The protagonist is a former member of the United States Coast Guard. His companion, Princess Donut, is a former cat show champion who gained sapience after consuming an enchanted pet biscuit.
The dungeon is managed by a System AI that distributes loot boxes via achievements and sets the difficulty for each level. To survive, crawlers must gain popularity with a galactic audience to secure sponsors and better gear. The stakes are existential: if crawlers fail to reach the stairs before a level collapses, they are killed. The series is noted for its blend of dark and comedic elements, using humor as a coping mechanism for the grim reality of the setting. Crawlers can earn rewards like new gear and experience points by completing achievements. Some survivors may even choose to become NPCs to gain Syndicate citizenship.
The series has seen massive success, with the first eight books selling over fourteen million copies as of July 2026. While initially self-published on Royal Road and Amazon, the series was acquired by Ace Books in 2024. Its popularity is heavily supported by audiobooks performed by Jeff Hays of Soundbooth Theater, which have reportedly surpassed physical and e-book sales in popularity. The series was originally released on the digital platform Royal Road in 2019. It has since been nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award.
