In short: While the show promised a high-octane look at Florida's coast, most scenes were actually filmed in California. The production team used local beaches and even a credit union headquarters to recreate the tropical atmosphere. This visual style helped the series achieve global popularity and a signature television legacy.

California served as the primary filming location for most of CSI: Miami, regardless of its tropical theme. While Raleigh Manhattan Studios in Manhattan Beach hosted interior filming, the Naples district and several beaches provided the Miami vibe. The production team frequently used the Marina Green Park and Rainbow Lagoon Park areas to simulate the city's high-rise skyline. They also utilized the Water Garden Park in Santa Monica to represent the Biscayne Courthouse. These diverse California spots helped recreate the specific atmosphere of the Florida coast.

The production even utilized specific landmarks to create the illusion of Florida. The SkyOne Federal Credit Union office in Hawthorne, California, functioned as the exterior for the Miami-Dade Police Department crime lab. The show's signature look was defined by its eerie blue lighting and flickering screens. This visual style was intended to maintain the essence of the original series. It helped establish a global popularity that made the show a top-ten ranking in numerous countries by 2005.

Creators Carol Mendelsohn, Anthony E. Zuiker, and Ann Donahue intentionally designed the show's aesthetic. The production team included these three individuals. They chose Miami because they felt it was a "rich" character with unique politics, diverse cultures, and significant water features, all of which provided a distinct "edge" over other locations. The show's lead, Horatio Caine, was a former bomb-disposal expert who specialized in explosive forensics. He was portrayed as a laconic lawman who lived between the perpetrators of evil and the citizens. His character was designed to be a skilled marksman who could handle himself on the street.

The series premiered on September 23, 2002, and ran for 10 seasons, totaling 232 episodes. It was the first direct spin-off of the original CSI, designed to transplant the same "gory crimes" and "dazzling graphics" into a new city while maintaining the core essence of the original procedural. The series concluded in April 2012 after a decade of broadcasting. David Caruso was the only performer to appear in every single episode of the 232-episode run. Despite the cancellation, the show was recently revived in 2024 as a true-crime series.
