Why a sitcom about a cougar stopped being about cougars after three seasons
In short: Created by Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel, the sitcom Cougar Town followed a divorced woman navigating life in Florida. Despite its provocative title, the show quickly pivoted away from its premise, eventually acknowledging that the term was no longer relevant to the characters' lives as they evolved beyond the initial concept.
Cougar Town premiered on September 23, 2009, on ABC, running for a total of 102 episodes across six seasons before concluding on March 31, 2015. The series was developed by Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel, who were inspired by Courteney Cox’s desire to return to television comedy. Lawrence, known for his work on Scrubs and Spin City, viewed the concept of a 40-year-old single woman as a zeitgeist-y topic, though he admitted the title was a risky roll of the dice intended to be noisy and grab attention.
The show’s title was a deliberate misdirection. While it initially centered on Jules Cobb, played by Cox, exploring the dating world, the creators never intended to focus on the cougar lifestyle. The name was justified only by the fact that the fictional town of Gulfhaven’s high school mascot was a cougar. By season 3, the show’s shift in focus was explicitly addressed when a character, Barb Coman, married a man, prompting the realization that the series was no longer about the titular concept.
The production moved from ABC to TBS after the third season. The cast featured a tight-knit group of friends and family, including Christa Miller as the intellectual Ellie Torres and Josh Hopkins as Grayson Ellis, whom Jules marries in season 3. The show was noted for its frequent guest appearances from actors associated with Lawrence’s previous projects, including former Friends co-stars and numerous Scrubs alumni. Despite the initial trepidation regarding the title, the show maintained a loyal following through its exploration of Jules’s life, her wine-loving habits, and her dysfunctional but supportive social circle.
