In short: From the mysterious island of Lost to the heights of Broadway, Daniel Dae Kim has navigated a career defined by breaking barriers. Whether re-learning Korean for a role or fighting for pay equity, his journey reflects a profound impact on both the screen and the industry.

Born in Busan, South Korea, in 1968, Daniel Dae Kim moved to the United States as an infant. His academic foundation in theater and political science from Haverford College, followed by an MFA from NYU, paved the way for a versatile career spanning television, film, and stage. He gained mainstream prominence between 2004 and 2010 playing Jin-Soo Kwon on the ABC series Lost, a role that required him to relearn Korean after not using it frequently since high school. Before his television success, he showcased his taekwondo abilities in the 1992 film American Shaolin. His early life in the United States also included growing up in New York City and parts of Pennsylvania.

Kim's career is marked by significant industry milestones and social advocacy. A unique agreement for an Asian-American performer was reached in 2014 when CBS Television Studios entered a first-look development partnership with his firm, 3AD. He has used his platform to address critical issues, such as speaking out against xenophobia during the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing the importance of representation, notably replacing Ed Skrein in the 2019 Hellboy reboot to avoid whitewashing controversy. His production company, 3AD, was responsible for the television series The Good Doctor, which ran from 2017 to 2024. He also served as an executive producer for that specific program.

His stage work has been equally prestigious, including a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play for the 2024 revival of Yellow Face. Beyond acting, Kim is a producer, notably for The Good Doctor, and is set to host the CNN International documentary series K-Everything in 2026. In 2025, Time magazine recognized his global impact by naming him one of the world's 100 most influential people. In addition to his acting, he has provided voices for video games like Saints Row and animated films such as Raya and the Last Dragon. He is also known to be a dedicated collector of vintage timepieces.
