From reality show winner to South Korean television star
In short: Before becoming a household name in K-dramas, Kim Tae-ho had to win his way onto the screen. After a grand prize victory in a 2006 talent audition, he underwent a total professional transformation, adopting a new stage name and navigating the complexities of mandatory military service.
Born Kim Tae-ho on February 9, 1986, the actor first entered the entertainment industry through the KBS reality talent show Survival Star Audition. His victory in the 2006 competition provided the foundation for a career defined by versatility, spanning from romantic comedies to intense crime thrillers. In 2010, he transitioned to his professional stage name, Choi Jin-hyuk, a move that preceded his first leading role in the family drama It's Okay, Daddy's Girl.
His ascent to prominence accelerated in 2013 with a well-received performance in the fantasy-period drama Gu Family Book. Such achievements enabled prominent secondary parts in popular series like The Heirs and the action movie The Divine Move. By 2014, Choi had moved into lead roles in miniseries such as the medical romantic comedy Emergency Couple and the legal drama Pride and Prejudice.
The trajectory of his career was briefly interrupted by mandatory military service, which began on March 31, 2015. While he could have served in the Seoul Police Promotional Team, he chose active duty. However, a knee injury led to his discharge after only seven months. Since returning to the screen with the hit crime thriller Tunnel in 2017, he has continued to diversify his portfolio with genres ranging from science fiction in Rugal to historical fantasy in Mr. Queen.
Choi's recent work includes the romantic comedy Positively Yours, released in 2026, and various international fan engagements, including a 2023 event in Taiwan and a 2024 concert in the Philippines.
