The Sith Lord who dismantled an entire empire to ensure his order's survival
In short: Darth Bane was a revolutionary Sith who realized his organization was failing. He abandoned the traditional structure of a massive Sith army, replacing it with the Rule of Two: a master to hold power and an apprentice to covet it. This singular decree defined the Sith for a millennium.
Created by George Lucas as a foundational figure for the prequel trilogy, Darth Bane originated as a miner named Dessel on the planet Apatros. After killing his abusive father and fleeing his home, he joined the Brotherhood of Darkness. He quickly grew disillusioned with the group's chaotic, incomplete teachings, which he believed mirrored the flaws of the Jedi. Seeking ancient wisdom, he discovered a holocron belonging to Darth Revan on Rakata Prime, which provided the catalyst for his radical new philosophy.
Bane’s Rule of Two was designed to prevent the infighting that plagued the Brotherhood. He orchestrated the destruction of both the Jedi and the Sith armies on Ruusan using a devastating 'thought bomb,' leaving himself as the sole survivor to carry on the dark side legacy. He then recruited a young girl named Rain, renaming her Darth Zannah, to serve as his apprentice. Their relationship was defined by a cold, calculated dynamic where the master constantly tested the apprentice's strength, knowing that one day she would be required to kill him to claim the title of Dark Lord.
The final confrontation between Bane and Zannah occurred years later on Ambria. As Bane’s body failed him, he sought the secret of essence transfer from the holocron of Darth Andeddu. During their climactic duel, Bane attempted to possess Zannah’s body to survive. While his physical form was destroyed, Zannah emerged as the new master, though she displayed a lingering tremor in her hand—a physical remnant of Bane’s influence. While much of his history was relegated to the non-canon Legends label in 2014, Bane remains a pivotal figure, appearing as a Force ghost in the animated series The Clone Wars and influencing the dark side’s trajectory long after his death.
Bane’s legacy is a subject of intense debate within the lore. When summoned by Darth Krayt over a century after the films, Bane condemned the 'One Sith' philosophy for abandoning his strict binary structure. His influence persists through the centuries, serving as the architect of the Sith's survival and their eventual return to power.
