Why the 2008 remake of a horror classic failed to impress critics and fans
In short: Directed by Steve Miner, the 2008 reimagining of George A. Romero's 1985 horror staple sought to modernize a classic premise. Despite a cast including Mena Suvari and Ving Rhames, the production faced immediate backlash, ultimately landing as a direct-to-video release that struggled to find a positive reception among genre enthusiasts.
The development of this project began in May 2005, with Taurus Entertainment Company, Emmett/Furla Oasis, and Millennium Films spearheading the effort. Screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick aimed to craft a fresh perspective while honoring the original film's focus on military dynamics, scientific intrigue, and social commentary. Production moved quickly, with principal photography wrapping in Sofia, Bulgaria, by September 2006, followed by additional re-shoots in June 2007.
The narrative follows a group in Colorado trapped by a military quarantine as an influenza-like virus turns the local population into zombies. The plot centers on Corporal Sarah Bowman and her allies as they navigate a medical center and an underground bunker, eventually uncovering a government bioweapon project gone wrong. While the film features familiar tropes, it intentionally avoids any narrative link to the 2004 reimagining of Dawn of the Dead, despite Ving Rhames appearing in both projects as different characters.
Upon its April 8, 2008, release, the film was met with harsh criticism. Reviewers described it as a slapdash and pathetic effort, with some critics labeling it offensively stereotypical or merely cheap entertainment. The critical consensus was overwhelmingly negative, with review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reporting that only 13 percent of surveyed critics offered a positive assessment. The average rating for the film sits at a low 2.66 out of 10, cementing its reputation as a significant disappointment within the horror genre.
