The tragic private life of Disney's beloved comic patriarch
In short: David Tomlinson is remembered for his warm, comedic roles in classics like Mary Poppins. Yet, behind the smiles of a Disney Legend lay a life marked by profound personal tragedy, including a harrowing murder-suicide and a lifelong crusade for autism awareness that reshaped British social care.
David Tomlinson became a staple of British and American cinema, particularly known for his work with The Walt Disney Company. He portrayed the patriarch George Banks in Mary Poppins (1964), the antagonist Peter Thorndyke in The Love Bug (1968), and Professor Emelius Browne in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). Despite his success in comedy, his early career was shaped by military service as a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF during World War II, where he served as a flying instructor in the UK and learned to fly in Canada.
His personal life was defined by a series of devastating misfortunes. In 1943, while serving in the war, Tomlinson married Mary Lindsay Hiddingh in New York. Tragically, in December of that same year, Mary committed murder-suicide by jumping from a hotel with their two young sons after realizing she could not join him in England until the war ended. Tomlinson later married actress Audrey Freeman in 1953, with whom he shared 47 years until his death in 2000.
Beyond the screen, Tomlinson was a significant advocate for neurodiversity. Following the autism diagnosis of his third son, Willie, he used his showbusiness connections to campaign for early awareness in the UK during the 1970s. Somerset Court, Europe's inaugural residential facility for autistic adults, was established with the assistance of him and his spouse. He was posthumously inducted as a Disney Legend in 2002, leaving behind a legacy that balanced high-profile entertainment with quiet, impactful social activism.
