In short: In Albert Brooks' 1991 film Defending Your Life, the recently deceased arrive in Judgment City to face a tribunal. Instead of heaven or hell, they must defend their earthly choices. If they have conquered their fears, they move on; if not, they are sent back to Earth to try again.

The film follows Daniel Miller, an advertising executive who dies on his 39th birthday and finds himself in a bureaucratic afterlife. Here, life is treated as a test of courage. Daniel’s defense attorney, Bob Diamond, argues that humans use so little of their brain capacity that they spend their existence driven by fear. The tribunal uses video footage from the subject's life to determine if they have evolved enough to progress to the next universal phase or if they must be reincarnated to face their shortcomings once more.

Central to the plot is Daniel’s relationship with Julia, a woman who lived a life of apparent courage. While Daniel initially struggles to prove his worth, his final act of bravery—risking his own transition to reach Julia—ultimately convinces the judges of his growth. Brooks, who wrote and directed the film, aimed to create a non-religious, non-traditional afterlife. He viewed the project as a meditation on the importance of self-examination, a practice he felt had been unfairly maligned by the culture of the time.

Despite being a critical success with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was not a commercial hit, grossing roughly $16 million against a budget exceeding $20 million. Nevertheless, it has maintained a dedicated following. Brooks has noted receiving thousands of letters from viewers who found comfort in the film’s depiction of the afterlife, which avoids traditional tropes of clouds and ghosts in favor of a more grounded, humanistic approach to the unknown.

The production process was notable for its casting and technical choices. Meryl Streep joined the project after a casual dinner conversation with Brooks, who subsequently rewrote the script to match her specific comedic rhythms. Filming involved around 1,000 extras and various locations across California. Decades later, the film remains a touchstone for its unique blend of fantasy, romance, and philosophical inquiry, recently receiving a 4K restoration by The Criterion Collection in 2021.
