In short: In the final installment of the Descendants franchise, Mal and her friends face a crisis that forces them to confront the morality of their own society. When a vengeful rival threatens to destroy the kingdom, the heroes must decide if the barrier separating villains from royalty should stand forever.

Released in 2019, Descendants 3 serves as the conclusion to the story of Mal, the daughter of Maleficent and Hades. Directed by Kenny Ortega, the film follows Mal and her friends as they attempt to integrate new villain kids into the kingdom of Auradon. However, the plan is disrupted by Audrey, the daughter of Aurora and Prince Phillip, who descends into villainy after feeling slighted by the kingdom's leadership. Audrey’s use of dark magic, including a sleeping curse and the transformation of the king into a beast, forces the protagonists to reckon with the inherent biases of their world.

The narrative explores the tension between the Isle of the Lost and the kingdom of Auradon. Mal initially proposes sealing the Isle's barrier permanently to protect her home, a decision that alienates her allies and highlights the fragility of their peace. The conflict reaches a climax when Mal, in her dragon form, must work alongside her rival Uma to defeat Audrey. The resolution involves Hades, Mal's estranged father, who revives Audrey after she falls into a coma. His intervention exposes a stark double standard: Audrey is immediately forgiven for her destructive actions because she is not classified as a villain, whereas those from the Isle remain perpetually stigmatized.

Ultimately, the film rejects the binary of good and evil that defined the kingdom's history. Mal concludes that she cannot serve as queen unless she can improve conditions for the Isle as well. By replacing the restrictive barrier with a bridge, she initiates a merger of the two societies. The film’s production was marked by the tragic death of cast member Cameron Boyce, to whom the premiere was dedicated. Despite the somber circumstances, the project achieved significant commercial success, with its soundtrack reaching number 1 on the Billboard Kid Albums chart and the film drawing over 8 million viewers within three days of its release.
