In short: After over a decade of development delays and shifting scripts, the long-awaited follow-up to the 2007 hit Enchanted premiered in 2022. Disenchanted reunites the original cast for a musical fantasy that explores what happens when a fairy tale life in the suburbs goes wrong, transforming reality into a high-stakes magical kingdom.

The project spent years in what is often called development hell. Initial discussions began in early 2010, with various writers and directors attached over the following years. It was not until December 2020 that Disney officially announced the film, largely credited to a script by Brigitte Hales. Production finally moved forward in 2021, with filming taking place in Ireland between May and July of that year, followed by reshoots in England and New York in 2022.

The story picks up ten years after the original, with Giselle and Robert Philip moving their family to the town of Monroeville. Dissatisfied with suburban life and the challenges of blending their family, Giselle uses a wish-granting wand to turn their world into a perfect fairy tale. However, the magic backfires, transforming the town into Monrolasia and slowly turning Giselle into a wicked stepmother. The plot hinges on the race against midnight, when the spell is set to become permanent, threatening to erase the original kingdom of Andalasia.

While the film features the return of Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel, it also introduces new antagonists, including Maya Rudolph as the arrogant Malvina Monroe. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who generally praised Adams's performance but noted it lacked the specific charm of the 2007 predecessor. Despite the long wait and the complex production history, the film serves as a direct continuation of the characters' journeys, blending live-action with animation to explore the consequences of wishing for a perfect life.

The musical elements were central to the production, with Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz returning to write seven songs and reprises. Notably, this included songs for Idina Menzel, whose musical number in the first film was famously cut. The film's visual identity was supported by the Canadian studio Tonic DNA, which handled the animation, while the physical production utilized locations across Ireland, including Powerscourt House, to bring the fantasy elements of Monrolasia to life.
