In short: Enchanted arrived in 2007 as a bold experiment, blending traditional animation with live-action New York City. By placing an archetypal princess into the cynical real world, the film served as both a loving homage and a self-parody of the Disney legacy, ultimately redefining the studio's approach to its own classic tropes.

The development of Enchanted was a long, winding road that began in 1997. Early scripts were reportedly R-rated and far removed from the final product, which eventually found its identity under director Kevin Lima. Lima sought to honor Disney’s heritage by integrating thirteen minutes of traditional animation—the first such effort from the studio since 2005—produced by James Baxter Animation. This visual contrast was central to the film's narrative, as the protagonist, Giselle, is physically transported from the hand-drawn kingdom of Andalasia into the live-action chaos of Times Square.

Achieving this hybrid aesthetic required immense technical coordination. Costume designer Mona May worked closely with animators to ensure that the characters' appearances remained consistent across media. For the wedding dress worn by Amy Adams, the production created eleven versions, each weighing roughly forty pounds and requiring a metal hoop to support twenty layers of fabric. These physical constraints were intended to mirror the exaggerated, idealized proportions of a classic Disney princess, providing a stark contrast to the gritty, modern reality of Manhattan.

The film’s musical identity was crafted by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who aimed to make the songs feel integral to the plot rather than mere interruptions. By blending operetta-style performances with Broadway sensibilities, the music reinforced the film's dual nature. This creative gamble paid off, as the film earned $340.5 million worldwide and established Amy Adams as a leading lady, proving that audiences were ready to see the classic fairy tale formula deconstructed and reimagined for a contemporary era.
