A 1997 French crime thriller defined by its relentless, high-octane stylistic violence
In short: Directed by Jan Kounen, Dobermann is a cult French action film that follows a charismatic criminal and his gang as they are pursued by a sadistic, obsessive police officer. With a narrative rooted in the novels of Joël Houssin, the film remains a visceral exploration of lawless, hyper-stylized urban conflict.
Released in 1997, Dobermann centers on Yann Lepentrec, a criminal known as Dobermann, played by Vincent Cassel. The character's criminal identity is established early, with the film noting he received his first firearm at his christening. Alongside his deaf partner, Nat the Gypsy, portrayed by Monica Bellucci, he leads a gang through a series of violent heists that draw the ire of the Paris police force.
The primary antagonist is Christini, a sadistic officer played by Tchéky Karyo, whose pursuit of Dobermann transcends professional duty, bordering on a personal vendetta. Christini’s methods are ruthless; he coerces a gang member named Olivier—who performs as a transvestite named Sonia—by threatening the life of Olivier's infant. This betrayal leads to a climactic raid on a disco where the gang is celebrating, resulting in a chaotic gunfight and the eventual death of Sonia.
The film’s conclusion is marked by extreme violence, as Dobermann pursues Christini in a stolen ambulance to avenge his fallen comrades. In a brutal sequence, Dobermann forces Christini’s head against the road while driving at high speed, leaving the officer presumably dead. While the surviving gang members escape, the final shots show them being tracked by a police helicopter, leaving their ultimate fate ambiguous. Despite the film's lasting cult status, a planned 2011 sequel titled Dobermann 2: Arm Wrestle, which was slated for a $35 million budget, never materialized.
