In short: In the 1994 film Don Juan DeMarco, a young man claiming to be the world's greatest lover is committed to a mental institution. While his psychiatrist attempts to treat the youth's apparent fantasy, the doctor finds his own life transformed, reigniting the passion in his own long-term marriage.

The film centers on John Arnold DeMarco, a 21-year-old who adopts the persona of the legendary Don Juan, complete with a cape and mask. After a failed suicide attempt, he is placed under the care of Dr. Jack Mickler, a psychiatrist nearing retirement. Mickler chooses to evaluate the youth without medication, allowing the patient to recount elaborate, romantic tales of his life as a lover in Mexico and on a remote Greek island. Despite spotting inconsistencies in these stories—such as the patient's Castilian accent—Mickler becomes deeply intrigued by the youth's commitment to his own myth.

As Mickler observes the impact of DeMarco’s presence on the hospital staff, he begins to question his own complacency. The psychiatrist starts listening to opera and actively works to restore intimacy with his wife, Marilyn. The narrative creates a mirror effect: while the doctor tries to ground the patient in reality, the patient’s romantic outlook forces the doctor to confront the lack of passion in his own life. This dynamic culminates in a mutual recognition, where Mickler eventually validates the youth's identity as a means of helping him transition back to his life as a man from Queens.

The production is notable for the pairing of Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp, who later reunited for the film The Brave. Critics were divided on the execution; some praised the chemistry between the leads, while others, like Roger Ebert, found the performance self-indulgent. Despite mixed reviews, the film achieved financial success for New Line Cinema, grossing over $68 million worldwide. The project also left a mark on music, with the Bryan Adams theme song earning nominations for an Oscar, a Grammy, and a Golden Globe.
