The first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl and its MVP
In short: Doug Williams didn't just break a glass ceiling; he dismantled it with a 42–10 rout. Despite facing systemic racism and being paid less than 12 backups, Williams became a pioneer of the NFL, proving that poise and intellect could overcome the era's most rigid prejudices.
In 1978, Doug Williams became the first African-American quarterback selected in the first round of an NFL draft. His path to the pros was defined by academic excellence and a 'studious nature.' While many scouts were hesitant, coach Joe Gibbs spent two days personally reviewing Williams' film and mechanics, eventually identifying him as a 'natural leader' with 'perfect passing mechanics.' This personal advocacy was crucial, as Williams faced overt racism from fans and even his own coaching staff during his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The financial and social hurdles were immense. While 12 substitutes received higher pay, Williams received $120,000 annually in Tampa Bay, representing the league's minimum wage for a primary quarterback. After a contract dispute and the tragic loss of his first wife, Williams sat out the 1983 season. He eventually found a sense of dignity in the USFL, where owners treated him as a human being rather than 'a piece of cattle.' He later returned to the NFL to reunite with Gibbs in Washington, where he finally achieved his historic milestone.
On January 31, 1988, Williams led the Washington Redskins to a victory over the Denver Broncos. Despite undergoing a six-hour root canal surgery just the day before, he threw four touchdowns in a single quarter, setting a Super Bowl record for most touchdowns in a half. He was named Super Bowl MVP, a feat that cemented his legacy as a trailblazer. Today, his influence continues through his family; his son, D.J. Williams, serves as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders as of January 2026.
