How a draft day surprise redefined the value of a defensive end
In short: In 2006, NFL analysts expected the Houston Texans to select running back Reggie Bush. Instead, they chose defensive end Mario Williams with the first overall pick. This decision set a new standard for defensive talent, leading to a career defined by relentless pressure and historic contracts.
Selected first overall in the 2006 NFL draft, Williams entered the league with immense expectations. While many predicted the Texans would prioritize offensive star Reggie Bush, the team instead signed Williams to a six-year, $54 million contract. He immediately proved his worth, recording 14 sacks in 2007 and accounting for 48 percent of the Texans' total sacks that season. He achieved this impact during his debut season by recording 4.5 sacks. His performance was so notable that he was named a first-team All-Pro by Sporting News.
His dominance on the field translated to significant financial milestones. In 2012, Williams signed a six-year deal with the Buffalo Bills worth up to $100 million, including $49.5 million guaranteed. At the time, this represented the most lucrative contract ever awarded to a defensive player in the NFL. His career statistics include 53 total sacks, a mark that stood as the second-highest in franchise history until it was surpassed by J. J. Watt in 2014. His defensive impact was further highlighted by his ability to force fumbles. He eventually finished his career with 11 forced fumbles, ranking second all-time in that category.
Beyond his physical presence on the field, Williams became known for his versatility and philanthropic efforts. During his tenure with the Bills, he debuted 'MariO's', a honey-toasted oats cereal designed to raise funds for a Buffalo charity supporting children facing cancer. Despite facing injuries, such as a torn pectoral muscle in 2011, he remained a formidable force, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors throughout his career. His community involvement also extended to law enforcement. He donated several vehicles, including five Chevrolet Camaros and five Dodge Chargers, to the Houston Police Department.
