In this 1998 action comedy, a chef and a gangster swap lives unexpectedly
In short: Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, Duplicate features Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role as a bubbly, aspiring chef and a ruthless gangster. When their paths cross, a chaotic identity swap forces the chef to navigate the criminal underworld while the gangster attempts to infiltrate his peaceful life.
Released in 1998, Duplicate is an Indian Hindi-language action comedy that marked the first collaboration between actor Shah Rukh Khan and Dharma Productions. The film draws inspiration from the 1935 American movie The Whole Town's Talking. Khan portrays two distinct characters: Bablu, a childish and optimistic chef, and Manu, a dangerous criminal. The plot hinges on their uncanny physical resemblance, which leads to a series of mistaken identities, forced role-swaps, and high-stakes confrontations.
The narrative follows Bablu as he pursues a career in catering and falls for Sonia Kapoor, a hotel manager. His life turns upside down when he is mistaken for Manu by the police. Manu, seeking to evade capture, forces Bablu to trade places. As Manu attempts to infiltrate Bablu’s personal life and flirt with Sonia, Bablu finds himself among Manu’s gang members, where he begins to influence them with his own moral values. This transformation eventually leads to a dramatic climax where Manu’s own girlfriend, Lily, intervenes to save Bablu.
Despite its star-studded cast, which includes Juhi Chawla as Sonia and Sonali Bendre as Lily, the film faced significant challenges. It received two nominations at the 43rd Filmfare Awards, including Best Villain for Khan and Best Lyricist for Javed Akhtar, whose work on the soundtrack—featuring songs like 'Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam'—was well-regarded. However, the film struggled at the box office. After opening on 230 screens in India, it failed to maintain momentum, ultimately resulting in a commercial loss of ₹1.5 crore.
