In short: When director Rakesh Roshan first cast his 1995 blockbuster Karan Arjun, he envisioned a different pair of leads. After his initial choices backed out over role disputes, a serendipitous shift brought Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan together for the first time, cementing a legendary cinematic partnership in Indian film history.

The 1995 fantasy action drama Karan Arjun, directed and produced by Rakesh Roshan, remains a landmark in Indian cinema. The narrative centers on two brothers, Karan and Arjun, who are murdered by their greedy relative, Durjan Singh, to secure an inheritance. Following their mother Durga’s desperate prayers to Goddess Kali, the brothers are reincarnated into different families, eventually reuniting twenty years later to exact their revenge.

The film’s production history is as dramatic as its plot. Rakesh Roshan originally approached Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan for the lead roles, but the project stalled when both actors insisted on swapping their assigned characters. After Aamir Khan declined the offer, Shah Rukh Khan returned to the project, leading to the historic first onscreen pairing of Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. This collaboration proved immensely successful; the film grossed ₹450 million worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing Indian film of 1995, trailing only Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Beyond its box office success, the film left a lasting cultural footprint. It received ten nominations at the 41st Filmfare Awards, securing wins for Best Editing and Best Action. The production utilized striking locations across Rajasthan, including the village of Bhangarh and the Sariska Palace, which served as the antagonist’s home. Decades later, the film’s enduring popularity was underscored by a worldwide theatrical re-release in November 2024, proving that the story of the reincarnated brothers remains a staple of Bollywood lore.
