The band named for a shelf space strategy
In short: When Mark Oliver Everett founded Eels in 1991, he didn't choose the name for its aquatic associations. It was a calculated move to manipulate alphabetical record listings—a plan that backfired spectacularly when he realized how many other artists shared his starting letter.
The band's identity is rooted in a specific retail observation by frontman Mark Oliver Everett (known as E). While touring and browsing, Everett noticed that records under the letter 'E' were clustered together at the beginning of sections. He chose the name "Eels" specifically so his discography would sit adjacent to his solo work. However, this strategy was undermined by the sheer volume of popular releases from other artists; Everett later noted that their records were buried between dozens of albums by Earth, Wind and Fire and the Eagles.
Despite the naming quirk, Eels established a distinct sonic identity centered on heavy emotional themes like family, death, and unrequited love. Their career has been marked by significant personal upheaval for Everett, including the suicide of his sister and his mother's cancer diagnosis. These tragedies directly informed the 1998 album Electro-Shock Blues, which explored mental illness and loss. In contrast, their 2000 release Daisies of the Galaxy was intentionally designed as a lighter "hotel wake-up call" to balance the preceding work.
The band has functioned primarily as Everett's vehicle, with members changing frequently while he remained the constant core. Their output is diverse, ranging from trip-hop-influenced UK successes like "Susan's House" to complex concept trilogies exploring desire and redemption. From signing early deals with DreamWorks Records to producing scores for films like Levity and contributing to soundtracks such as Shrek and American Beauty, Eels has maintained a multifaceted presence in both indie and mainstream spheres.
