In short: Eight Below is a 2006 survival drama inspired by a harrowing 1958 Antarctic expedition. While the film depicts six sled dogs surviving six months alone in the frozen wilderness, the real-life event it adapts was far more tragic, leaving behind a legacy of mystery and remarkable endurance in the extreme cold.

The 2006 film Eight Below, directed by Frank Marshall and starring Paul Walker, tells the fictionalized story of a guide who must abandon his eight sled dogs at an Antarctic research base during a severe storm. The narrative follows the dogs' struggle to survive for six months in the harsh environment, eventually reuniting with their owner. While the film received generally positive reviews and earned over $120 million worldwide, it faced criticism for its length and scientific inaccuracies, such as depicting bright daylight during the Antarctic winter when the region experiences constant darkness and extreme temperatures.

The film is a remake of the 1983 Japanese production Antarctica, which was based on the 1958 Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. In that historical event, 15 Sakhalin Husky sled dogs were left behind when the team could not return to Showa Station. When researchers finally returned a year later, they found that only two dogs, Taro and Jiro, had survived. Seven had died while still chained, and six remained unaccounted for. Eight Below shifts the timeline to 1993 and offers a more optimistic outcome, with six of the eight dogs surviving the ordeal.

Production of the film involved more than 30 dogs to portray the eight canine characters, utilizing a mix of Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies. Although the American Humane Association supervised the filming, the production was not without controversy, including an on-set incident involving a trainer using significant force during an animal fight. Despite these behind-the-scenes challenges, the film resonated with audiences, earning an 'A' grade from CinemaScore and selling over 3 million DVD units in North America alone.
