A Parisian housewife discovers her identity is a lie in this intense action thriller
In short: In the 2005 French action drama Empire of the Wolves, a stylish woman named Anna Heymes finds her life unraveling. Plagued by terrifying hallucinations and nightmares, she soon realizes her own face is a surgical fabrication, masking a hidden past that connects her to a dangerous Turkish criminal underworld.
Directed by Chris Nahon and released in 2005, Empire of the Wolves blends psychological mystery with high-stakes action. The narrative centers on Anna Heymes, a 31-year-old Parisian housewife whose reality begins to fracture as she experiences visions tied to a string of brutal murders occurring across the city. As she struggles to maintain her composure, she discovers that her physical appearance has been fundamentally altered through intensive reconstructive surgery, a procedure designed to obscure her true Turkish heritage.
While Anna grapples with the revelation of her manufactured identity, the film follows a parallel investigation led by two contrasting police officers. Jean Reno stars as the unorthodox detective Schiffer, who teams up with the more cautious officer Nerteaux, played by Jocelyn Quivrin. Together, the duo attempts to untangle the complex web of violence surrounding the murders. Their investigation eventually forces them into a direct and violent confrontation with the Turkish mafia, a conflict that culminates in a life-or-death struggle involving Anna’s would-be assassin.
The film, which features a screenplay co-written by Jean-Christophe Grangé, Christian Clavier, Chris Nahon, and Franck Ollivier, premiered in France on 20 April 2005. It later gained international exposure when it was screened at the Fantasy Film Fest in München on 30 July 2005. By weaving themes of identity, memory, and criminal conspiracy, the film explores the fragility of a life built on secrets. The story serves as a dark examination of how far individuals will go to bury their pasts, and the inevitable consequences when those buried truths finally resurface to demand a reckoning.
