From radio's conscience to comedy stage: the multifaceted career of Erica Rhodes
In short: Long before she was a stand-up comedian, Erica Rhodes was a thirteen-year-old voice on a legendary radio program. From her roots in Massachusetts to her work in Los Angeles, her journey through acting, comedy, and even medical clinics reveals a performer defined by remarkable versatility.
Born on April 5, 1983, in Newton, Massachusetts, Erica Rhodes was raised in a musical household. Her mother, Kristina Nilsson, was a violinist with the Boston Pops, while her father, Dean Rhodes, was a professional clarinetist before transitioning to accounting following a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. This rich cultural background likely influenced her early entry into the performing arts.
At 13, Rhodes started her career in earnest by joining the A Prairie Home Companion cast. Following her 1996 debut, she became a regular visitor, notably creating the recurring 'The Conscience' character for host Garrison Keillor. Her artistic work also reached the studio, featuring on the 1997 Grammy-nominated record, Garrison Keillor’s Comedy Theatre.
Her career has since expanded into diverse comedic and dramatic territories. She has appeared in the independent horror film Plague Town (2008) and has guest-starred in popular television series such as Modern Family and New Girl. Rhodes has also ventured into the competitive comedy circuit, appearing on NBC's Bring the Funny in 2019 and America's Got Talent in 2024.
Beyond the screen and stage, Rhodes's path has been unconventional. Before establishing her acting career, she worked at a medical marijuana clinic in Los Angeles. She has since released multiple comedy albums, including Sad Lemon in 2019 and Ladybug in 2023, and has explored voice acting, such as voicing Dotty in the Netflix series A Tale Dark & Grimm in 2021.
