The romance novel icon who conquered the world without even knowing it
In short: In 1987, a man dancing in a Miami nightclub realized he was famous. He didn't recognize himself as the face of hundreds of romance novels until three strangers pointed out the covers. This is the story of Fabio, the man whose accidental stardom redefined an entire genre.
For years, Fabio Lanzoni was a ubiquitous presence on bookstore shelves, yet he remained largely unaware of his own celebrity. The Italian-American model, who began his career at age 14 after being discovered by photographer Oliviero Toscani in Milan, spent much of the late 1980s and 1990s as the face of romance novel covers. It wasn't until a chance encounter in a Miami nightclub in 1987 that he realized the 'guy on the books' was actually himself.
His rise was characterized by an extraordinary work ethic and a sudden, massive commercial impact. At one point, he was managing up to 16 book cover photoshoots in a single day. By 1992, his presence in the genre was so massive that over 55 million of his covers had been sold. Literature also felt the 'Fabio Phenomenon'; as the premier male romance novelist to publish under his true identity, he co-authored various books alongside writers such as Wendy Corsi Staub and Eugenia Riley.
Beyond the covers, Lanzoni's career transitioned into diverse roles, from acting in films like *The Exorcist III* and *Zoolander* to serving as a long-term spokesman for brands like I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!. Despite the glamour, his life has been marked by personal discipline and significant loss, including the death of his grandmother, who raised him for his first five years. Today, he maintains a rigorous lifestyle, treating his body 'like a Lamborghini' through strict dieting and weight training.
