Can an obsessive fan destroy the idol he once worshipped above all else?
In short: In the 2016 thriller Fan, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan plays a dual role: a famous actor and his own dangerous, lookalike stalker. What begins as a tribute from a devoted admirer spirals into a dark, global game of cat-and-mouse that threatens to dismantle the star's carefully constructed life.
Conceived by director Maneesh Sharma in 2006, the film explores the volatile, co-dependent relationship between celebrities and their devotees. The story follows Gaurav Chandna, a Delhi-based fan whose uncanny resemblance to his idol, Aryan Khanna, allows him to win local talent shows. When Gaurav’s attempt to defend Aryan’s reputation through violence is met with harsh rejection, his adoration curdles into a vengeful obsession that spans continents, from Mumbai to London and Croatia.
The production was a technical feat, utilizing 3D scanning and advanced prosthetics to allow Khan to portray both the middle-aged star and his younger, obsessive counterpart. Notably, the film is songless, relying on an original score by Andrea Guerra rather than traditional Bollywood musical numbers. Despite its ambitious scope and the complex visual effects that earned it a Filmfare Award, the film’s reception was mixed; while critics lauded Khan’s dual performance as a career highlight, many felt the screenplay suffered from uneven pacing and overlong action sequences.
Beyond the thriller elements, the film serves as a meta-commentary on the nature of stardom. By weaving in references to Khan’s real-life career and filming at his actual residence, Mannat, the movie blurs the lines between fiction and reality. It forces the audience to confront the uncomfortable reality of celebrity culture, where the same fans who build a star's reputation possess the power to destroy it when their expectations are not met.
