In short: When Yash Chopra’s 1993 thriller Darr hit theaters, it changed the trajectory of Indian cinema. Originally conceived as a project with different leads, the film became a blockbuster that turned an obsessive stalker into a cultural icon, forever altering the career of its lead actor and redefining the psychological thriller genre.

The production of Darr was a complex puzzle of shifting casting decisions. Director Yash Chopra initially envisioned a project inspired by the Hollywood film Cape Fear, with Naresh Malhotra directing. When Chopra took over, the casting process became notoriously difficult. Sridevi was the first choice for the lead role of Kiran, but she declined after Chopra refused her request to play the obsessive lover instead of the victim. Other stars, including Madhuri Dixit and Divya Bharti, were considered or signed before Juhi Chawla eventually secured the role.

The role of the antagonist, Rahul Mehra, saw even more turbulence. Sanjay Dutt was the original choice but was unavailable due to legal issues. Aamir Khan was briefly attached to the project but was removed after requesting a joint narration with Sunny Deol and expressing dissatisfaction with the climax. Ultimately, Aditya Chopra suggested Shah Rukh Khan after seeing his debut in Deewana. Sunny Deol, given the choice between the hero and the villain, opted for the hero, fearing a negative role would damage his career. This decision proved pivotal, as Khan’s portrayal of the stalker became a milestone in his career.

Upon its release on December 24, 1993, Darr was a massive commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. Critics praised the direction, screenplay, and performances, particularly Khan’s stuttering delivery of the line, 'I love you, K-k-k- Kiran.' The film’s soundtrack, composed by Shiv–Hari, was the second best-selling of the year, selling about 4.5 million units in India. Beyond its immediate impact, the film’s legacy persisted through remakes in other languages and its role in establishing Khan as a global star, paving the way for his later international recognition.
