How a real-life baseball miracle forced a Hollywood rewrite
In short: When the Farrelly brothers filmed Fever Pitch, the script assumed the Boston Red Sox would lose. But then history intervened. An unexpected championship victory turned a standard romantic comedy into a live-broadcast celebration, forcing the cast to attend the game in character.
The 2005 film Fever Pitch, starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, was originally designed as a remake of a 1997 British film about association football. The American adaptation shifted the focus to baseball, specifically centering on the intense devotion of Ben Wrightman to the Boston Red Sox. At the time of production, the film's narrative arc was built around the expectation of a Red Sox playoff loss.
However, the 2004 baseball season provided an unscripted climax. By defeating the New York Yankees in the ALCS, the Red Sox made MLB history as the inaugural squad to recover from a 3–0 series disadvantage, following a ninth-inning rally that erased a seven-run gap. They went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals to win their first World Series in 86 years, breaking the 'Curse of the Bambino.'
This sporting upheaval necessitated an immediate rewrite. On the day of Game 4, the Farrelly brothers brought the lead actors and a film crew to Busch Stadium hours before the first pitch. In a moment of cinematic synchronicity, Fox cameras captured Barrymore and Fallon—in character as Lindsey and Ben—running onto the field to kiss as the Red Sox secured the 4–0 victory. While critics offered mixed reviews, with a 66% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film's box office performance reached a worldwide gross of approximately $50.5 million against a $30 million budget.
