In short: When a family man is sentenced to prison for killing an intruder, he is thrust into a brutal world of state-sanctioned violence. Behind the bars of the Security Housing Unit, he discovers that guards are betting on inmate fights, forcing him to choose between survival and exposing the truth.

Released in 2008, the film Felon follows Wade Porter, a blue-collar worker whose life unravels after he unintentionally kills a burglar on his lawn. Despite his plea of no contest for involuntary manslaughter, his three-year sentence becomes a nightmare when he is framed for a prison stabbing. He is subsequently transferred to the Security Housing Unit, a place defined by 23-hour lockdowns and a lack of visitation rights for the first three months. The narrative is inspired by actual events that occurred during the 1990s at the California State Prison, Corcoran.

The film explores the harrowing reality of prison life, where inmates are forced into gladiatorial combat for the entertainment and profit of corrupt correctional officers. Lieutenant Jackson, the commanding officer of the unit, orchestrates these fights and manipulates the system to keep inmates under his thumb. Wade’s struggle to maintain his humanity is complicated by the disintegration of his relationship with his fiancée, Laura, and the mounting pressure to align with prison gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood to survive the daily violence.

The climax of the story involves a desperate attempt to expose the corruption within the facility. With the help of an unlikely alliance—including a retired correctional officer, the FBI, and Laura—the truth about the guards' illicit activities is finally brought to light. Wade’s additional sentence, which had been unjustly extended by Jackson’s false testimony, is commuted, allowing him to reunite with his family after serving 15 months. Interestingly, the production itself had a strange brush with reality; the crew only discovered after filming that one of the extras was a convicted serial killer named Clifton Bloomfield.

Critics have offered mixed reactions to the film, noting that while the depiction of prison life can feel somewhat hackneyed, the performances by Stephen Dorff and Val Kilmer, combined with a complex plot, provide significant weight. Filmed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, over a tight 24-day schedule in late 2007, the production managed to capture a claustrophobic intensity that remains the film's most enduring quality.
