In short: Alan Shapiro initially rejected the chance to direct the 1996 Flipper remake, preferring an Archie adaptation instead. He eventually accepted the project, viewing it as a challenge in filmmaking that he dubbed Jaws-lite. The film combined animatronic dolphins with real ones, creating a unique, if mixed, cinematic experience.

The 1996 adventure film Flipper, distributed by Universal Pictures, serves as a remake of the 1963 original and its subsequent television series. Directed by Alan Shapiro, the story follows a boy named Sandy Ricks, played by Elijah Wood, who spends a summer with his uncle, Porter, on the Florida Gold Coast. While Sandy initially dreads the boredom of his trip, he soon forms a bond with a dolphin he names Flipper after witnessing a local fisherman, Dirk Moran, kill another dolphin in the pod.

The production relied heavily on animatronic dolphins designed by Walt Conti, who argued that using real dolphins is less effective than audiences might expect. Despite this, the human cast did interact with a trio of real dolphins during filming. The plot takes a dark turn when the group discovers that toxic waste is poisoning the local waters. Using Flipper’s echolocation and a camera, they locate the illegal dumping site, leading to a climactic confrontation with a great hammerhead shark and the eventual arrest of the antagonist.

Critical reception was lukewarm, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 30% approval rating and Metacritic assigning a score of 43%. However, audiences surveyed by CinemaScore were more favorable, awarding the film an A- grade. Financially, the production faced challenges, grossing $20.1 million in the United States and Canada against a $25 million budget, though it reached $35.5 million worldwide. The film’s marketing leaned into its cinematic lineage, using a tagline that parodied the 1978 film Jaws 2.
