Why a $60 Million War Epic Became One of the Year's Biggest Flops
In short: Flyboys, a 2006 drama about American pilots in World War I, was privately financed by filmmakers who poured $60 million into the project. Despite its ambition, the film became a box-office bomb, grossing only $17.8 million worldwide and facing harsh criticism for its historical inaccuracies and unconvincing visual effects.
The production of Flyboys was a departure from the standard Hollywood studio model, relying on private financing from investors including producer Dean Devlin and David Ellison. The film aimed to capture the experiences of the Lafayette Escadrille, a French-formed squadron of American volunteers. To achieve this, the production utilized authentic aircraft, including a Nieuport 17 from Kermit Weeks' collection, alongside various replicas. Despite these efforts, the film was widely criticized for its historical lapses, such as the blending of different military units and the use of aircraft technology that did not align with the period.
Technical inaccuracies plagued the film's portrayal of the Great War. For instance, the CGI scenes incorrectly depicted engines as stationary, whereas the rotary engines of the era featured spinning cylinders for cooling. Furthermore, the film utilized Fokker Dr.I triplanes in a way that was historically contentious, with producers admitting they chose to paint them red to help audiences distinguish between friend and foe, despite knowing it was inaccurate. Even the military adviser for the project, Jack Livesey, was later revealed to be a convicted fraudster who had fabricated his own military service and credentials.
Critical reception was largely negative, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 34% approval rating and critics labeling it a poorly scripted exercise in rewriting history. While audiences polled by CinemaScore were more generous with a B+ grade, the film's commercial performance was disastrous. Opening at number four at the domestic box office, it quickly lost momentum, dropping 61% in its second weekend. Ultimately, Variety named it one of the ten biggest box-office flops of 2006, marking a stark contrast to the massive personal investment made by its creators.
