In short: With a budget of 18 million euros, the 2008 film The Red Baron was intended to be a major international success. Instead, it became one of German cinema’s greatest financial failures, struggling with negative reviews and a public that found its portrayal of a war hero deeply controversial.

Directed by Nikolai Müllerschön, the biographical action film aimed to humanize Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary World War I flying ace. To maximize its international appeal, the production was filmed entirely in English. However, the film faced immediate backlash upon its March 2008 release in Berlin. In Germany, where the glorification of war heroes is largely taboo, the film’s attempt to balance action with a romantic subplot felt disconnected from the historical reality of the era.

Critics and historians were particularly harsh regarding the film's historical accuracy. The narrative introduces a fictitious romance between Richthofen and a nurse, Käte Otersdorf, which biographer Joachim Castan dismissed as complete rubbish. Furthermore, the film depicts Richthofen sharing friendly drinks with his rival, Canadian pilot Roy Brown, in no man's land—a scenario far removed from the cold-blooded reality of the air war. While the film was praised for its visual effects and musical score, reviewers like Peter Bradshaw panned the story and character development as plodding and unbelievable.

The financial results were catastrophic. The film grossed only 1.6 million euros, failing to recover even one-tenth of its massive budget. It vanished from the top ten list of German cinema attendance by its third week. Despite the film's failure, it remains a curious case study in the tension between cinematic myth-making and historical legacy. While some, including a namesake nephew of the pilot, appreciated the film’s focus on the Baron’s internal thoughtfulness, the broader consensus remains that the film failed to resonate with audiences or critics.
