In short: Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man was the first film to pit iconic horror villains against each other. Though critics at the time were lukewarm, the production established a new cinematic template for monster crossovers, influencing everything from King Kong vs. Godzilla to modern franchises like Freddy vs. Jason.

Released in 1943, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man was born from Universal's desire to capitalize on the financial success of The Wolf Man, which had grossed nearly one million dollars. The film brought together Larry Talbot, played by Lon Chaney Jr., and Frankenstein's monster, portrayed by Bela Lugosi. While the script by Curt Siodmak was criticized for its loose continuity and disregard for the timelines of previous films, it introduced enduring tropes, most notably the rule that a werewolf only transforms during a full moon.

The production faced significant hurdles. Universal initially planned for Chaney to play both monsters, but the physical strain and complex make-up requirements forced a change. Lugosi’s performance as the monster was hampered by the fact that the character was intended to be blind and capable of speech—a remnant of the plot from The Ghost of Frankenstein. When test audiences laughed at Lugosi’s dialogue, the studio cut the lines, leaving the monster's blindness unexplained in the final edit. The climactic battle was ultimately performed by stuntmen Gil Perkins and Eddie Parker.

Despite mixed contemporary reviews, the film is now recognized as the progenitor of the 'monster rally' genre. It paved the way for subsequent crossovers like House of Frankenstein (1944) and House of Dracula (1945). While some critics argue these films contributed to the decline of the classic horror series, others view them as slick, enjoyable entertainment that allowed beloved icons to share the screen. Its legacy persists, with the film appearing as a recurring cultural touchstone in later movies ranging from Alien vs. Predator to Mad Dog and Glory.
