The kidnapping that left a legend with 10 dimes in his pocket
In short: In 1963, a 19-year-old Frank Sinatra Jr. was snatched from a Lake Tahoe lodge by amateur criminals. While the ransom was paid, the event left a permanent psychological mark on his father, who would carry a specific set of coins for the rest of his life.
On December 8, 1963, just days after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, two 23-year-old former high school classmates, Barry Keenan and Joe Amsler, kidnapped Frank Sinatra Jr. from Harrah’s Club Lodge in Lake Tahoe. The pair targeted the young singer, who was then 19 and just beginning his career, hoping to extort a massive ransom from his wealthy father, 'Old Blue Eyes.' The kidnappers successfully snatched him from his dressing room, blindfolded him, and transported him to a hideout in a suburb of Los Angeles.
The ransom negotiations were intense. The kidnappers demanded $240,000, a sum Sinatra Sr. gathered and delivered to the FBI via a suitcase drop in Sepulveda, California, on December 11. Interestingly, the father had initially offered $1 million, but the kidnappers declined the larger amount. The victim was eventually released after the third conspirator, John Irwin, grew nervous and freed him. Sinatra Jr. was found walking in Bel Air and was subsequently hidden in a security guard's patrol car trunk to evade the press.
The aftermath of the crime was profound. While the FBI eventually captured the trio and recovered nearly all the ransom, the experience caused significant distress for the elder Sinatra. He became so concerned about having enough coins for payphone communication during the crisis that he began carrying 10 dimes at all times for the remainder of his life—a habit that continued until he was buried with the coins in his pocket. Despite defense claims that the abduction was a publicity stunt, the FBI confirmed it was a real crime, evidenced by a confession letter left in a safe-deposit box.
