In short: Gargamel is the quintessential villain of the Smurfs franchise, a perpetually failing sorcerer who lives in a shack with his cat, Azrael. Though he constantly schemes to capture, eat, or transmute the Smurfs into gold, his elaborate plans—and his legendary temper—have kept him chasing them since 1959.

Created by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo, Gargamel debuted in the 1959 story 'Le Voleur de schtroumpf'. While initially intended as a one-off antagonist, his dynamic with the Smurfs proved enduring. Physically, he is depicted as a balding, stooped man in a tattered robe, living in isolation with his anthropomorphic cat, Azrael. His motivations have shifted across decades of media: early cartoons saw him seeking to turn Smurfs into gold or use them as ingredients, while modern films emphasize his desire to extract their 'mystical essence' for ultimate power.

Despite his vast library of grimoires and potions, Gargamel is an inveterate bungler. His schemes range from the bizarre—like a magnet designed to attract only blue objects—to the creation of Smurfette, a plot that failed when she defected to the Smurfs. His frustration is so profound that he frequently breaks into tantrums, shouting his signature catchphrase, 'I hate Smurfs!' He is often aided or hindered by his sentient 'Great Book of Spells,' which provides him with magic but frequently interprets his requests with literal, humiliating consequences.

The character’s complexity occasionally transcends pure villainy. In rare instances, he has aligned with the Smurfs to combat greater threats, such as the wizard Balthazar, or to resolve magical crises. His personal life is equally chaotic; he once attempted to marry for a map to the Smurf village and has been forced to mentor an apprentice named Scruple. Whether he is being zapped by his own relatives or outsmarted by a pheromone-masking trick involving cinnamon, Gargamel remains a persistent, if perpetually defeated, fixture of the franchise.

His name, suggested by Yvan Delporte, likely references the giantess Gargamelle from François Rabelais’s 'Gargantua and Pantagruel,' a fitting nod given his relative size to the Smurfs. While his character design has faced criticism for alleged antisemitic tropes, Peyo’s wife maintained that he never intended to take political or religious stances. Today, he remains a global icon of cartoon villainy, voiced by a diverse array of actors across dozens of languages.
