In short: Decades after their television debut, the Smurfs have returned in a vibrant CGI format. Produced primarily in Belgium, this 2021 series reimagines the classic characters for a new generation. From its world premiere in 2021 to a confirmed fourth season, the franchise continues to evolve across international broadcast networks.

The 2021 animated series, titled The Smurfs, marks the third television adaptation of the Belgian comic franchise created by Peyo. The project was officially announced on August 31, 2017, following a collaboration between Peyo Productions and Dupuis Audiovisuel. Véronique Culliford took on the role of producer for this new CGI-animated iteration, which draws visual inspiration from the film Smurfs: The Lost Village, though it remains an entirely independent production.

Production is largely centered in Belgium, with 75% of the animation work completed at the DreamWall studio in Charleroi. Additional services are provided by French studios, including Ellipse Studio Angoulême and Gao Shan Pictures. The series made its global debut on April 18, 2021, on the Belgian channel La Trois. Since then, it has expanded its reach significantly, securing distribution deals with Nickelodeon in the United States and various international broadcasters, including KiKA in Germany and TF1 in France.

The show has maintained a steady release schedule, with a second season announced in February 2022 and a third season arriving in 2024. By June 2024, a fourth season was officially confirmed. Looking ahead, the franchise is set to expand further in 2026 with two new standalone episodes, produced through a partnership between The Peyo Company, DreamWall, and Blue Spirit. This ongoing development highlights the enduring appeal of the Smurfs, which have successfully transitioned from print to multiple eras of television animation.
