In short: Before it was a bustling Dallas suburb, Garland was a battleground of competing communities. Two rival settlements, Embree and Duck Creek, fought for dominance until a single post office decision merged them into one city, eventually transforming into a manufacturing and retail hub with a population exceeding 246,000.

The origins of Garland lie in the mid-19th century, as immigrants arrived in the Peters colony around 1850. By 1874, two separate settlements had formed: Embree, called for Dr. K. H. Embree, and Duck Creek, named for the nearby river. As the Santa Fe Railroad depot brought growth, a fierce rivalry developed between the two towns.

The conflict reached a turning point regarding the location of the local post office. To resolve the dispute, Dallas County Judge Thomas F. Nash requested that Congressman Joe Abbott decide the matter. The decision to move the office was finalized in 1887, and the newly unified area was named Garland in honor of U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland.

The communities were formally incorporated as the city of Garland in 1891. Since then, the city has transitioned from a railroad and onion-shipping hub into a diverse industrial and suburban center. By 1960, the population had reached approximately 38,500, and by 2020, it had grown to 246,018 residents, making it the 13th-most-populous city in Texas.

Garland's industrial identity was shaped by various mid-century developments, including aircraft plants during World War II and the establishment of the KRLD radio antenna tower in 1937. Today, the city is a significant part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, characterized by a diverse population and a mix of residential and mixed-use developments like 5th Street Crossing.
