Was Disney's most immersive hotel a $250 million cosmic mistake?
In short: Disney's Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser promised a 100% immersive journey through the galaxy. Instead, it became a high-priced experiment in live-action role-playing that struggled to justify its luxury status, eventually closing its doors less than two years after its pandemic-delayed debut.
Opened on March 1, 2022, the Halcyon was designed as a two-night immersive cruise through the Star Wars universe. Set between the events of Episode VIII and Episode IX, guests participated in storylines involving the Resistance, Smugglers, or the First Order. While it won a Thea Award for brand experience in November 2022, the project faced significant criticism regarding its value proposition. The hotel was located near Disney's Hollywood Studios. It was intended to be the company's most experiential concept ever.
The experience was defined by its high cost and specific constraints. A minimum room rate of $4,800 for two people covered essentials like food and transportation to Galaxy's Edge, but the small, windowless cabins drew comparisons to bunkers rather than luxury accommodations. Critics noted that the high price point and the singular story arc may have limited the potential guest market. The minimum rate included lightning lanes for attractions. Guests could also use a mobile app to select their specific storyline.
The financial fallout of the project's closure was substantial. After closing permanently on September 30, 2023, Disney reported an accelerated depreciation of approximately $250 million. As of January 2025, the building is slated for conversion into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering to support upcoming projects like a Disney Villains-themed land at Magic Kingdom. The facility was originally intended to be shaped like a starship. It was situated to the east of World Drive.
The project's legacy remains a subject of debate. While some viewed it as a 'dream come true' for fans due to its deep narrative integration, others, including prominent reviewers, pointed to technical glitches and service issues as reasons the experience failed to meet its lofty promises. Some guests experienced issues with the mobile application. A viral review by YouTuber Jenny Nicholson highlighted these service problems.
