From casting room reader to breakout star of the silver screen
In short: Before she was a rising star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Geraldine Viswanathan was working behind the scenes. The Australian actress has navigated the complex journey from reading scripts in casting rooms to earning critical acclaim at major international film festivals.
Born on 20 June 1995, Geraldine Viswanathan has built a diverse career spanning comedy, drama, and psychological thrillers. Her journey into the industry involved early exposure, appearing in a Kodak television commercial at age four, and later moving to Los Angeles at fifteen to seek representation for roles with Disney and Nickelodeon. While studying journalism and international studies, she performed sketch and stand-up comedy in Sydney. She also attended the Hunter School of the Performing Arts in Newcastle.
Her professional momentum accelerated significantly in 2018. That year, she was cast in the film Blockers, which led Refinery29 to label her the film's breakout star. During this same period, she appeared in the Sundance Film Festival selection Hala and the Netflix production The Package. Her versatility was further recognized by The Hollywood Reporter, which included her in its 'Next Gen Talent' list of 20 rising stars. She also appeared in Emo the Musical in 2016. Additionally, she was shortlisted for the Heath Ledger Scholarship in 2015.
Viswanathan has also demonstrated an interest in production and complex narratives. She acted in and executive produced the 2021 rom-com 7 Days, which secured an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature during 2022. Her recent work includes a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thunderbolts*, released on 2 May 2025, where she took over the role of Mel. She also voiced the character Tawnie in the sixth season of BoJack Horseman. Furthermore, she starred in the 2020 film The Broken Hearts Gallery.
Her background is a blend of cultures; her father, Suresh Viswanathan, is a doctor of Tamil descent from India, while her mother, Anja Raith, is an artist of Swiss-German descent. This multicultural heritage is reflected in her professional reflections on the importance of representing brown girls on screen. Her mother attended musical theatre school in London. She was also raised by a father who worked as a filmmaker and ballet dancer.
