How a Miami loan shark accidentally became a Hollywood producer
In short: When Chili Palmer moved from debt collection to film production, he didn't just change careers—he changed the rules of the game. This 1995 gangster comedy explores the thin, often violent line between the criminal underworld and the high-stakes machinery of the movie business.
Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and based on Elmore Leonard's 1990 novel, Get Shorty follows Chili Palmer, a Miami-based loan shark and movie enthusiast. The narrative begins with a classic underworld dispute: after a rival mobster, Ray "Bones" Barboni, takes Palmer's leather jacket, Palmer retaliates by breaking Bones' nose. However, the power dynamics shift when the Brooklyn boss Momo, who provided Palmer's protection, dies of a heart to attack, leaving Palmer vulnerable to Bones' demands.
The plot pivots when Palmer travels to Los Angeles to collect a gambling debt from B-movie director Harry Zimm. Finding an opportunity in the chaos of Hollywood, Palmer pitches his real-life pursuit of a runaway debtor as a film concept. This leads him into a web of deceptive investors, including Bo Catlett and Ronnie Wingate, who use a limousine service as a front for drug trafficking. As Palmer navigates the $500,000 cost of acquiring script rights for 'Mr. Lovejoy', he transitions from a collector of debts to an active film producer.
The film's commercial and critical success was significant. Released on October 20, 1995, it grossed $115.1 million against a $30 million budget and held the number one spot at the domestic box office for three consecutive weeks. John Travolta's performance earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the 53rd Golden Globe Awards. While the film features a star-studded cast including Gene Hackman and Danny DeVito, it also draws from reality, featuring an appearance by the real-life Miami loan shark who inspired the character.
